Headstone

Image
Image Credit:  Sandra Seitamaa on Unsplash Silent headstone greets the eyes  They don't sparkle like yours in the picture. Dead flowers, dead leaves, and stones mark your slot, Layers of dust and mud are your weighted blanket.  Almost 18 months have passed in a blurry Of tears, sleepless nights, disbelief,  When dreams of you seem clearer than the reality without you. "I wish I could tell you this, I wonder what you would've thought of that",  Daily reminders that you're no longer here. Almost six months ago I saw your headstone. I hate going back to it. You're there and you're not.  I think I felt your presence, maybe it was just the wind whispering to leave you be.  So much to be done, so much to be said, A reality without you is hard-hitting, Laughter without you seems unfair,  Crossing milestones in my life, you won't be there.  Your silent headstone will greet the eyes for another 18 months   And just like the wind, you will b...

Can the Dead Really Live Again?

Image
Image Credits: thecoolist.com I dream of you in vivid colours, Happy moments, fleeting minutes that pass on all too soon. You're long gone,  I don't hold out hope of ever seeing you again. Is it too selfish to be thankful? Not ageing into childhood. Thought you'd stay a while longer, But the scary whirlpool is now at rest.  I dream of you in colour. It's hard not to. I'm not trying to. You yell at me, disappointed, I'm nothing like you and I'm nothing like me. You're alive in my dreams, Blood pumping the way it's supposed to, Eyes vibrant, that's how they should be. You're smiling. It's been a while since I've seen those gleams. I dream of you in black and white, We were laughing at the moon. Mystical being. Spot on the phone. Our feet meeting deserted streets, That was our paradise.  Can the dead really live again? We force them alive, In pictures and memories and flashbacks and regrets. That's how they'd want it, We tell our...

Grim Reaper

Image
Image Credit:  Generated by OpenAI's DALL·E. In the silence of the early hours, It entered the place, Passing beds of frozen white, It stopped beside you, at last. Dressed in black, this figure unseen, Your soul it came to collect. I couldn’t reach to hold your hand, As you breathed your final breath. In waking hours, your coldness I touched A thousand times, I blinked my eyes. A thousand times, I gazed at you, But you were still, like the vast sky I stared at in aimless misery. Disbelief still clouds my mind on days I lose myself, And on days I smile, like a twisted knife, Leaving scars that heal and reopen in repeat. The inevitability of death doesn’t lessen the sledgehammered blow When the ones we love are the first to go. Six feet under, I never thought it’d be this soon. But now, it's the peace you need and deserve. It’s the rest you were robbed of through the years, The end of suffering—a reminder of your endless sacrifice, And your rarity in this world.

2022

Image
Where do I begin, 2022? You were far from the bringer of joy, Hurling loss after loss my way, And it’d be a lie to say you let me breathe easy. You reduced me to ashes You took and took from me, until I was hollowed out.  You gave me false hopes of positive,  Only to turn and laugh in my face.  I thought the clouds would bring me solace,  Reminders of life moving on, Reminders of how we drift and dissolve. 2022, you stole from me,  Like an unfeeling fiend, you tore the biggest part from me, 21 years is all I had, and yet like a bitter-sweet symphony Those years — I had them. Yet 2022, I can’t hate you; you brought her peace,  You’re letting her rest easy, I guess I owe you a thank you.  While the replay of last words and gestures remain, So does the numbing grief and pain.  But I survived you,  My heart, though weak, still beats another day, Those meant to stay will stay, And the seconds that turn into lifetimes keep passing by; So now 2023, ...
