Ses Mots, After that Rainy Day

Years passed

Yet she continued

To polish that evening

Until it gleamed

Far brighter

Than the life it had been given.

She had made him

Larger than the moment

Then larger

Than himself.

He never possessed

The depths she gave him

A permanence

He never earned.

His words,

Once carried softly

On the sound of the rain

Had long finished speaking

Only she

Kept listening.

She had forgotten

What the rain had always known

That some things arrive

With the beauty of their leaving.

first you hear the calling

the drops then follow

and for a while

the world is transformed

until it passes.

the clouds scatter

nothing asks to be kept.

that girl had mistaken wonder

for something that could be held

gathered the rain in her hands

and wondered why it slipped away.

she was mesmerised

only later to understand

not every spark

is a star

not every voice

deserves an echo.

some things glow

only because

a hopeful heart

keeps feeding them light.

and that was the quietest sadness...

not that the moment meant nothing

that she spent so many years

giving meaning to someone

who never carried

the weight of it.

for the rain had known

when to leave

she wishes now

she had gone with it.
